How to carve a pumpkin:
Ok so I too thought I was crazy when I thought about writing this article until I ran into a friend at the grocery store and she told me that she had never carved a pumpkin. After being shocked I thought that everyone should carve a pumpkin at some point in their life. Here are a few pointers.
1. Purchase a pumpkin. There is no science to selecting a pumpkin just make sure it is not rotten. Purchase the pumpkin that speaks to you. It does not have to be perfectly round, or short and fat or tall, or flat, or all orange. Just like you, each pumpkin is different. This allows your creativity to shine.
2. Take a marker and create a shape around the top of your pumpkin to create an opening which should be large enough to fit your hand in. Many people do a traditional circle but get creative.
3. Ok, here is where I break tradition: I used to risk my digits with huge sharp knives, small pairing knives and such, now I highly recommend spending $3 and purchase a pumpkin carving kit. You can get this at the grocery store. You will use these tools to cut through the design you just drew on the top of your pumpkin.
4. Once you have cut into the top of the pumpkin, you will want to remove the “lid.” Remember that the stem is fragile, so if you want to have a stem I would not recommend grabbing the lid by the stem and utilizing any force to get the top off. Once the top is off, take a knife and cut/scrape off the pulp and seeds.
5. Here comes the mess part. Make sure you have newspaper down and a garbage bag or compost bin near you. Roll up your sleeves and begin removing the seeds and pulp from within the pumpkin. If you purchased the pumpkin carving kit there is a wonderful scrapper, if not, use a large spoon and dive right in.
6. Now that the contents have been removed, take a pencil or felt tip pen and sketch your design on your pumpkin. Tip: think about the difficulty of cutting out tiny details of your design through thick pumpkin skin. The sky is the limit on design. Have fun and for some of you just take the knife and carve freely. You are the pumpkin artist.
7. Be sure to cut all the way through the pumpkin. Once you have completed carving you will want to use your hands and push any cut-out features from the inside out. Be gently and utilize patience.
8. Once you have your pumpkin carved, you may decide to light it. Some people utilize candles while others use more modern devices that have a much lower risk of fire. Either way, be careful and utilize common sense. Don’t leave a candle burning unattended even if it is contained in a pumpkin.
This some advise from this over the top father who spent way too much time carving a replica of his son’s Deluxe Transformer Bumblebee Costume and use these pumpkin carving tips. If you need Halloween Costume ideas check out these.
